Yngvar Sandström graduated from what today is HDK-Valand, Gothenburg University in 1948 whereafter he worked for several years at NK Verkstäder in Nyköping on a.o. the NK Triva-collection.
a Together with Alf Svensson, who had worked for long time at Dux, Sandström founded S-design in Malmö 1960. Their most well-known design was the Galaxy lounge chair which was launched by Dux in 1971. Galaxy was made of injection molded plastic, and due to its tall back, a very advanced method was needed to construct it. A special tool was built over a year to the cost of half a million kronor to create Galaxy. The lounge chair got a lot of attention and came to be an international success.
Sandström and Svensson also worked with Bergbom Belysning, Miljöexpo and Nässjö Stolfabrik. Besides Swedish companies, the S-Design studio collaborated with manufacturers of rattan furniture in the Philippines.
