Nils Jonsson (1914-1958) was a Swedish furniture designer and craftsman, known for his mid-century modern designs. He was born in Småland, Sweden, and began his career as an apprentice in a furniture factory at the age of 14.
In the 1940s, Jonsson started his own furniture workshop in the small town of Tranas, where he created his signature style of furniture, characterized by clean lines, organic shapes, and high-quality craftsmanship. He was inspired by the work of other Scandinavian designers, such as Alvar Aalto and Bruno Mathsson, but also added his own unique touch to his designs.
Jonsson's most famous design is the "Delphi" chair, which he created in 1954 for the Swedish Pavilion at the Triennale di Milano exhibition. The chair features a curved backrest and seat made from laminated wood, with tapered legs and a slender profile. The design was praised for its simplicity and elegance, and is still considered an iconic example of mid-century modern design.
Jonsson's work was highly influential in the Scandinavian design movement, and he received many awards and accolades during his career. He died at a young age of 44 in 1958, but his legacy lives on through his innovative and timeless furniture designs.
